Charge Through in Style in the New Tahoe!

The 2025 Chevrolet Tahoe High Country shows off all the luxury in the updated, fifth-gen, large SUV. Spanning from real wood trim to an automatic tailgate.

What’s Good:
Great ride courtesy of air-suspension and magnetic ride control shocks. Comfortable interior. Nicely styled. Sonorous V-8 rumble.
What Could Improve:
Fuel economy numbers that sting in the modern, hybrid era. $92,000 is a hard pill to swallow. 24-inch wheels?!?
My Conclusion:
A pleasant driving experience with the added old-school charm of the rumbling V-8. Love the ride and all the space. But you got to be ready to pay.

OVERVIEW

Starting its fifth-generation in 2021, Chevrolet updated the Tahoe for 2025. That means this 2025 Chevrolet Tahoe High Country received updated styling outside, new technology inside, and, if you go diesel, more power. Other than the diesel, the Tahoe carries on unchanged, mechanically speaking. You still choose between a 5.3-liter and a 6.2-liter V-8, and all the rumbly goodness that comes with it.

Chevrolet now offers six trims of Tahoe, starting with the base LS, which costs $60,495 (That includes the $1995 destination charge). Above that is the LT, then the RST, Z71, and Premier, until you reach the top-of-the-line High Country trim. Deciding on a Tahoe High Country with four-wheel-drive starts at $83,195. My test car included a few options and cost $92,000

Correct, nearly $100K for a Chevrolet SUV! But considering the capability combined with the comforts and well executed technology, it starts to make some sense.

You get the larger, 6.2-liter V-8 as standard in the Tahoe High Country. It’s the only trim equipped as such. It continues to churn out 420 horsepower and 460 lb.-ft of torque. Healthy numbers, certainly. But not blockbuster compared to modern turbocharged engines. Look no further than the 2025 Nissan Armada.

The difference comes from the linear power-up, the consistent response, and soothing rumble in the background. Chevrolet tuned the 6.2-liter to run smooth and willingly climb to its redline with zero hesitation. It uses a 11.5:1 compression ratio, and direct fuel injection to keep the overhead valve engine pumping. One downside, it asks for premium fuel to deliver the goods.

Other Tahoe trims rely on the 5.3-liter V-8, which produces a respectable 355 horsepower and 383 lb.-ft of torque, enough to keep moving, no doubt. However, if you want the extra 0.9-liter—and a higher compression ratio—Chevrolet offers the 6.2-liter on RST and higher trims.

Finally, Chevrolet offers the turbocharged, inline-six-cylinder diesel on every trim of Tahoe. It makes 305 horsepower and 495 lb.-ft of torque, an increase of 28 HP and 45 lb.-ft of torque.

All three engines mate up to a fantastic 10-speed automatic transmission. It shifts quickly and smoothly. And 10 gears allow a nice and wide ratio spread to offer quick launches from rest as well as nice and low engine speeds while cruising. In fact, eighth, ninth, and tenth gears are overdrive. The final drive ratio is 3.23:1, by the way.

Five of the six trims come standard with rear-wheel-drive. And on most of those trims, adding four-wheel-drive adds $3000 to the price. Four-wheel-drive includes a two-speed transfer case. At the push of a button, you choose between Two high (rear-wheel-drive), Four high, and Four low. The sixth trim, in this case is the Z71, it includes four-wheel-drive as standard.

All combined, fuel economy isn’t great for the Tahoe, which is no surprise. My larger engine, four-wheel-drive equipped test SUV manages no better than 14 miles per gallon in the city, 18 mpg on the highway, 16 combined. The best fuel economy comes from a rear-wheel-drive 5.3-liter and it’s still only 15/20/17 city/highway/combined, respectively.

We do not yet know the latest diesel-powered figures yet, but I imagine they will stay close to the 2024 Tahoe diesel figures of 21/28/24 city/highway/combined, in rear-wheel-drive trim.

Classically, the Tahoe used same suspension geometry that underpinned the Silverado, which uses the same frame. But, since the start of the fifth-generation, 2021, the Tahoe uses a multilink, independent rear suspension. Coupled with the longstanding independent front suspension, it’s fully independent.

But my Tahoe High Country test car takes it a step further with an air-suspension along with magnetic ride control shock absorbers to adapt to conditions as well as offer very different feel based on the various drive modes available. In the normal driving mode, the ride is downright plush.

Moreover, the air suspension lets you choose from different ride heights, depending on whether you wish for easier unloading/loading, or want a bit more clearance when headed off road. Critically, Chevrolet tuned this suspension well. The Tahoe takes full advantage of the adjustability and refines the driving experience much further than you’d expect from a bowtie body-on-frame SUV.

And the trick suspension still allows you to tow. The Tahoe can pull up to 8400 lbs., if properly equipped. The best my High Country test vehicle could manage is 8100 lbs. That’s due to its heavier engine and 4WD instead of RWD.

Inside

Chevrolet went big with screens in the latest Tahoe. Both in size and quantity. To start, you get a 11.0-inch digital instrument cluster screen and a massive 17.7-inch center display. But, with the $1745 entertainment package, you get two additional screens to keep the second-row passengers occupied. You also get a head up display and the rear-view mirror doubles as a screen for a camera mounted high in back, lest you fill the cabin to block your eyeline.

Speaking of, you can fill the Tahoe with up to 123 cubic feet of stuff. Or, you know, pretty much all the things. With the just the third row down, you still have 73 cubic feet of space to use and a decent 26 cubic feet with all three-rows up. Access to all of the above comes courtesy of an automatically opening tailgate, by the way. No kicking required, just wait a few seconds with the keyfob in possession and it opens right up.

But back to the center display, it wirelessly connects to Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. It also comes with Google built-in (Assistant, Play, and Maps) and Alexa, which makes for lots of easy-to-use technology. There’s also three-zones of climate controls, heated second row seats, heated steering wheel, heated and ventilated first row seats, and a newly designed center console with an easy access wireless smartphone charger.

And, for the old-school among us, you also get comfortable seats with plenty of space all around as well as real wood trim embedded throughout. Classy.

For an additional $4835, you can go get the High Country Deluxe package, which includes several bits for both the interior and exterior. There’s enough, I’ll just list it: power running boards, air suspension, panoramic sunroof, hill descent control, and the max trailering package (blind zone steering assist with trailer, hitch view, smart trailer integration indicator, enhanced cooling radiator, trailer brake controller, 2-speed transfer case).

The aforementioned air-suspension comes with the package, which plays an important role for the ride. And, if you want to tow, the max trailering package offers quite a lot in its own right. And then a few straight up luxuries like the panoramic moonroof and power running boards. It’s expensive. It’s also a lot.

in conclusion

Chevrolet transformed a relatively simple, body-on-frame, large SUV into a sophisticated nice to drive machine. It’s a Chevy that categorically outperforms a Cadillac Escalade of several years ago (I’m sure the current Escalade is fantastic, but haven’t reviewed it yet). Yet, you still get that intoxicating V-8 rumble and enviable power delivery that comes with it. The latest Tahoe performs, looks quite good, and keeps everyone comfortable.

But you gotta pay. Both the price tag and the cost to fill the fuel tank stings in the modern era. Even a base LS still surpasses $60k. Oof. But, if you have the means, and really want a big machine, the Tahoe, especially this High Country is hard to beat.
