A Hatch with Heat: New K4 GT-Line Turbo

Following the new for 2025 Kia K4 sedan, the new for 2026 K4 Hatchback adds convenient cargo space and even more striking styling to the compact car.

What’s Good:
Great exterior and interior styling, clever dual digital display, solid engine, and healthy space for both people and property.
What Could Improve:
Only an independent rear suspension on the top two trims. Second row not quite comfortable for adults on a longer trip.
My Conclusion:
As long as you do not want all-wheel-drive, the K4 hatchback delivers style and space, as well as good fuel economy for considerably less than most crossovers today.

OVERVIEW

A year after introducing the new for 2025 K4 compact sedan, Kia brought this hatchback version for 2026. It retains the same sharp creases and tight lines of the sedan, but with a shooting brake profile and additional cargo space.

Offering fewer options than the sedan, you choose between three trims of hatchback: EX, GT Line, and GT Line Turbo. My top-of-the-line test car stands out with 18-in wheels, an acoustic windshield, gloss black accents, alloy pedals, and, logically enough, a turbocharged engine under the hood.

For the cargo space privilege, Kia charges an extra $1000 than the comparable K4 sedan. That equates to a base price of $26,235 for an EX. My top trim with additional options rings up at $33,020. But that money brings great styling, a fair amount of luxury, and more than adequate space, all while staying well beneath compact crossover prices.

powertrain

The base engine of the K4 hatchback resides in two of the three trims offered. It’s an efficient 2.0-liter I-4 making 147 HP and 132 lb.-ft. of torque, which hooks up to a CVT and powers the front wheels.

Kia swaps in a 1.6-liter Turbocharged inline-four-cylinder for the GT-Line Turbo, which delivers a much healthier 190 HP and 195 lb.-ft. Even better, that power then goes through an eight-speed automatic before heading to the front wheels. Huge improvements over the other trims, but you do pay for it at the pump. The GT Line Turbo manages 26 MPG in the city, 33 on the Highway, 28 combined. You lose two mpg in the city, one on the highway, and two again combined compared to the 2.0-liter.

Worth it, I’d say. As you get a smooth and balanced engine that cleanly runs up to its redline. Despite the turbocharger, power builds close to linearly, making it easy to modulate and manage. Moreover, the eight-speed automatic shifts quickly and gives you immediate and positive engagement. Bury the pedal and a reasonably quick kick-down is followed by solid thrust, easily enough to push you into the seatback.

With a curb weight of 3338 lbs. that results in a stout 17.6 lbs. per horsepower to haul the hatch around. Kia claims you need but 8.1 second to reach 60 mph from rest. Not hot hatch levels—but warm hatch. Overall, it’s at worst an eight percent fuel penalty for a 29 percent power bump. Easy choice for me.

chassis

For the GT Line and Turbo Kia K4 Hatchback, you get a strut suspension up front and an independent multilink independent setup in back. However, if you go with the base EX trim, you get a torsion beam solid-rear axle, which bums me out. All K4’s should enjoy the greater comfort of a fully independent chassis.

It’s not just geometry; GT Line versions also get a sportier tune and a faster steering ratio as well. All that adds up to a chassis that keeps up with the stronger engine in the handling department. Chuck the K4 into a corner and the body stays relatively level, granting you decent levels of grip and balance. Being front wheel drive, you need to show patience with adding power at apex. But, if you do, the light and sportier nature the GT Line shines through.

As you race off to the next corner, you’ll feel a smile creep on to your face. Again, it requires a bit of patience, but disciplined drivers will enjoy higher than expected levels of grip and near neutral chassis balance. Don’t expect to run down the latest GTI, but you’ll keep ‘em honest!

And, when it’s time to settle down, the K4 hatch also rides perfectly pleasantly. Furthermore, Kia isolated the cabin from road and wind noise surprisingly well. Even on the interstate, everything stays hushed. Kia built one of the quietest compact cars in the mainstream market.

Inside

Kia also proves you do not need a crossover to provide adults with room in the second row. I found myself with both knee and headroom when seated back there. Though the seats bottoms sit lower than ideal. Adult thighs wouldn’t want to deal with a road trip back there. But that’s no different than most compact crossovers.

Of course, just fold the second row down and enjoy gobs of cargo space instead. Kia doesn’t provide a figure, but I would guess at least 40 cubic feet. The liftgate reveals 22 cubic feet worth of space without the second row folded. Oh, and beneath the floor lies a space saver spare, no inflation kit here.

Upfront, the GT Line Turbo K4 hatch includes a quite wide “dual digital display.” It’s one long continuously curved screen, which encases the 12.3-in digital instrument cluster on the left, 5.0-in climate screen in the middle, and 12.3-in center display on the right. Among other things, you get wireless Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a wireless smartphone charging pad, and heated seats.

My test car included the GT Line Turbo Technology package, a $2300 suite of many things. You get additional driving aids but also ventilated front seats and a heated steering wheel.

Conclusion

Kia crushed it in the styling department with the latest K4 hatchback. I dig the long wheelbase stretching the wheels to the corners and limiting both the front and rear overhangs. I like the vertically stacked head- and taillights and sharp creases in the body work, particularly the rear spoiler integrated into the rear end.

It also shows that crossovers are often superfluous. You do not need one just to get nice levels of cargo space and reasonable comfort in both rows of seating. You also benefit from a smaller, lighter machine that tends to get more out of a gallon of gas. Not to mention the fun factor when the going gets spirited.

If you do not feel the need for all-wheel-drive, you’d save some money if you considered a hatchback like the K4.

Of course, Kia sells a compact crossover too—the Kia Sportage—if that’s your preference.
