Soak In this Tasty New Lamborghini!

Lamborghini just revealed a plug-in hybrid SUV, the Urus SE. It delivers 789 horsepower, 701 lb.-ft of torque, and over 37 miles of electric only driving range.

This is the Lamborghini Urus SE. A new, plug-in hybrid version of the mega SUV from the Italian supercar brand, announced just ahead of the 2024 Beijing Auto Show. This is the first plug-in hybrid SUV from Lamborghini. And it packs a serious punch.

Total system power for this two-row crossover SUV tops out at 789 HP and 701 lb.-ft of torque. The main source remains a twin-turbocharged 4.0-iter V-8. But engineers re-tuned it to work with electricity. That drops peak outputs from 657 Hp and 627 lb.-ft of torque to 612 HP and 590 lb.-ft, respectively. But the electric motor steps deliver a peak 189 HP and 356 lb.-ft of torque of its own.

The electric motor mounts inside the casing of the eight-speed automatic transmission. And can power all four wheels at speeds up to 84 mph. However, once the engine lights and everything works together, the Urus SE takes but 3.4-seconds to reach 60-mph and will eventually reach 194 mph, according to Lamborghini.

The motor sources electricity from a 25.9-kWh battery pack, which is the same size as the 2024 Porsche Cayenne PHEV line-up. That’s logical enough as the Cayenne and Urus share a platform. And Volkswagen owns both brands. By the way, the 2024 Porsche Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid, is not far behind the Lambo, making 729 HP and 700 lb.-ft of torque.

The 2024 Porsche Cayenne Turbo E-Hybrid is one of three announced in 2023.

Back to the SE, Lamborghini mounted the battery pack just above the rear axle and beneath the load floor. And claims the Urus SE will travel over 37 miles without using a drop of gasoline on a fully charged pack, impressive.

The all-wheel-drive system utilizes an electric hydraulic clutch to distribute torque between the front and rear axles. Lamborghini calls it the electric torque vectoring system. Finally, the supercar brand claims “on demand” oversteer from the electronic rear differential, as well. That is very on-brand and something definitely worthy of a test.

With all this electric wizardry at work, it’s not surprise that you choose among 10 different drive modes for the Urus SE. I call three of them: Stada (street), Sport (sport), and Corsa (track) your more typical on-road choices. Another three: Neve (snow), Sabbia (sand), and Terra (earth or dirt) your typical off-road choices. And the final four: EV Drive, Hybrid, Performance, and Recharge, your electric use options. Lamborghini calls them “Electric Performance Strategies.” Fair enough.

Drive modes also affect the ride height of the Urus, thanks to air springs that lift the Urus SE as much as 2.4-inches from the lowest track, or corsa, ride height settings. The suspension includes adaptive stabilizer bars, as well, that work on a 48-volt system.

Styling wise, designers refreshed the Urus. Up front, you see a new front bumper, grille, hood, and headlights. While the rear receives a new diffuser, “Y” lights, and spoiler, which, by the way, Lamborghini says produces 35 percent more downforce than the outgoing unit. Along those lines, engineers added new underbody vents and air ducts. Finally, wheel size for the SE range from 21- to now 23-inches

Inside, the SE gets a new larger center display, now 12.3-inches, which pairs nicely with a 12.3-inch instrument cluster.

For colors, you choose among more than 100 exterior and 47 interior color combinations. Wow.

Expect details, like price and fuel economy, closer to its on sale date. As soon as I learn more, I will be sure to share.

When the Urus first arrived in 2019, I appreciated its performance and wild styling, but struggled to see it as a true Lamborghini.

But this SE is a turning point. Lamborghini penned a beautiful shape, the specs impress, and I quite like the claims of oversteer on demand. And it does all this while drastically reducing its carbon footprint.

In the end, vehicles like this make me feel better about our automotive future.
